Tallow Balm for Babies and During Pregnancy: What to Know
A lot of parents ask us this. The honest answer is that we cannot tell you it is right for your baby or your pregnancy. Here is what is in it, and the questions to take to your GP or midwife.
Can you use tallow balm on a baby?
Talk to your GP, midwife or child health nurse before using any new product on a baby, including ours. Babies' skin is thinner and more reactive than adult skin, and the right product depends on your baby. AusTallow is a cosmetic moisturiser for general use. It has not been specifically tested on infants, and it is not a treatment for nappy rash, cradle cap, eczema or any other skin condition. If your baby has a rash or irritated skin, that needs a proper check, not a new cream.
What is in it
So you can show your health professional exactly what you are asking about, AusTallow contains three ingredients and nothing else:
- Australian grass-fed beef tallow
- Australian beeswax
- Australian extra-virgin olive oil
There is no water, no fragrance, no essential oils and no preservatives. Some parents prefer a short list like this, because there is less to react to and it is easy to check. Short and natural is not the same as safe for everyone, though. People can react to any ingredient, including natural fats and beeswax.
During pregnancy
Many people look for fragrance-free products with short ingredient lists while pregnant, and dry or tight-feeling skin is common. A plain balm like ours has no essential oils or retinoids, which are the ingredients people are most often told to check. Even so, ask your GP or midwife about any product you are unsure of. We are not able to give medical advice.
We do not make claims about stretch marks or any pregnancy-related skin changes, and you should be wary of any product that does.
If you get the go-ahead
- Patch-test first. Apply a tiny amount to a small area, then wait 24 hours and check for redness or irritation.
- Use very little. A smear is plenty. Warm it between your fingertips first so it spreads thinly.
- Stop straight away if you see redness, a rash or any irritation, and speak to your health professional.
- Do not use it on broken, weeping or infected skin.
AusTallow is a cosmetic moisturiser. It is not a therapeutic good and it is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease or skin condition. Information on this page is general in nature. If you have a diagnosed skin condition, speak to your GP or dermatologist.
